Joe Biden To Help India Become A Permanent Member Of UNSC

For a long time, India has demanded a permanent United Nations Security Council Seat (UNSC). For a long time, UNSC hasn’t undergone any reformation. Joe Biden in the policy paper of his campaign has mentioned strengthening Us-India relations by pushing India to become a permanent member of UNSC.

What Is UNSC?

United Nations is an international organisation founded in 1945. It is made up of 193 member states as of now. The mission and work of the UN are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding charter. There are six main organs of the UN as given below. UNSC is one among them.

  • General Assembly (UNGA)
  • Security Council (UNSC)
  • Economic and Social Council
  • Trusteeship Council
  • International Court of Justice (ICJ)
  • Secretariat

The UN charter establishes the membership of Security Council. Under article 23, it consists of 15 members, 5 permanent with veto power (US, UK, Russia, France, China) and 10 non permanent members elected for a 2 years term.

India will enter the UNSC as a non-permanent member from January 2021 to December 2022. India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UNSC 7 times before is the past years. (1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1984-85, 1991-92, 2011-12)

Biden’s Policy Paper

A policy paper released by the Biden Campaign during the presidential election which mentioned that the Biden administration will place high priority on strengthening the Indo-Us relationship by pushing India to become a permanent member of UNSC, continuing cooperation on terrorism, climate change, heath and trade.

By becoming the US President, Mr Biden has an opportunity of fulfilling his 20-year-old dream to strengthen the India-Us ties he wants to achieve in 2020. in 2006, he announce his vision for the future of India Us relations

He has also worked to make that vision a reality, including leading the charge in congress, working with democrats and republicans, to approve the Us-India civil Nuclear agreement in 2008.

Fair and free elections, equality under the law, and the freedom of expression and religion

These core principles have endured throughout each of our nations’ histories and will continue to be the source of our strength in future”

Joe Biden played a lead role, both as Chairman of the senate Foreign relations committee and as Vice President in Barack Obama administration, in systematically deepening strategic engagements, people to people ties and collaboration with India on global challenges.

Recognising India’s growing role on the world stage, the Obama-Biden administration formally declared US support for India’s membership in a reformed and expanded UNSC.

Conclusion

In today’s world order where the 4th most powerful country on earth ( according to global firepower index) and 2nd most populous country in the world does not have a UNSC permanent seat, UNSC loses its relevance.
