12 More Made-In-India ‘Swathi’ Radars For China Border

In a major boost for the Indian Army on the China front, the Indian Army has put up a proposal to the defence ministry for buying 12 Swathi weapon-locating radars developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation at a cost of approximately Rs 950 crores, as reported by ANI.

The proposal is expected to come up for approval by the Defence ministry at an upcoming important meeting.

A major push is also expected in small arms also as the planned orders for foreign assault rifles are now going to be given to Indian vendors who have made significant developments in this field.

What Is SWATHI Radar?

Swathi is a mobile artillery-locating phased array radar developed by India. This counter-battery radar is designed to detect and track incoming artillery and rocket fire to determine the point of origin for counter-battery fire.

The main purpose of Weapon Locating Radar is designed to detect and track incoming artillery rounds, mortar and rockets and locate their launchers. In its secondary role, it can also track and observe the fall of shots from friendly guns and provide fire corrections to counter-battery fire.

Swathi Radar comes up with the following detection ranges:

For Artillery Rounds → 2-30 km
For Rockets → 4-40 km
For Mortars → 2-20 km

It can track Up to 7 targets simultaneously.
