Captain Devinder Singh Jass: Man Who Left MNC Job To Serve In The Army

Captain Devinder Singh Jass was a part of the PARA Special Forces in the Indian Army. In January 2009, he joined the elite 1 Parachute regiment of the Indian Army. He was a Captain rank officer in the Indian Army who made supreme sacrifice during an encounter with the terrorists in the Sopore district of Jammu and Kashmir in 2010.

Captain Devinder Singh Jass was born on September 29, 1983, in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. He was extremely passionate to join the Indian Army since childhood. He was a very energetic and enthusiastic boy in his childhood and was good at academics as well in his school days. Captain Jass completed his schooling from Guru Har Krishan Public School. Then, he enrolled for an engineering degree in Computer Science at IIIT, Allahabad.

Captain Jass pursued his MBA in Mathura. Even before completing his MBA degree, he was well settled with a good-paying job at an MNC. But he joined the Indian Army after leaving his job as it was his dream career. Therefore, he went to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun for his training.

Joining The Special Forces

After joining the Indian Military Academy, he was trained for almost a year and then got commissioned in the Army as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Signals in 2008. Captain Jass was a very active person and always an adventurous life. He was keen to join Special Forces. As a result, he volunteered for the selection procedure for the forces and got selected in the 1 Parachute Regiment. He always served the country without thinking of his own life. He was very happy to join the forces. His team members could see his courage and excitement every time. He later went to the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir to serve in November 2009.

Sopore Operation To Neutralize The Militants

On February 22, 2010, the security forces received the information from the intelligent sources about some activities of militants in Chinkipora village of Sopore district, Jammu and Kashmir. The forces decided to launch an operation. The team divided the operation into two parts. Firstly, searching for the militants. Secondly, eliminate them if they do not surrender. Captain Jass lead the team for the next day’s operation. Captain Jass, along with his team, started the operation in the early hours of the day on February 23. The militants were hiding in a residential building. Captain Jass, with the cooperation of his team, surrounded the building and blocked their escape.

Militants started open firing after realizing the threat. At around 4:45 AM, the team decided to invade the building and destroy the militants. But militants had some of the advantages to them. The Special Forces team was unaware of their weapons and other equipment. Also, they were sizable in number and had positioned themselves in such a position that it seemed to favor them. When Captain Jass moved forward from the door along with his team, the militants from all directions fired upon him. They were equipped with hand grenades and automatic weapons.

Captain Jass was no ordinary soldier. He was trained for such situations. He managed to neutralize two enemies. But, he was severely injured in the operation and later lost his life. He showed extreme bravery and an act of courage which inspires everyone. Captain Jass laid down his life in the service to the nation because he cared for his nation first and not for his own life. Captain Jass was awarded by “Kirti Chakra”, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award for his leadership and sacrifice in the difficult situation.

His father Sri Bhupinder Singh Jass, mother Smt. Dalbir Kaur and sister Harpreet Kaur survive Captain Devinder Singh Jass. They must be proud of their son as he served his country through his best efforts. But at the same time, it has been more than 10 years since the incident. Living the rest of life without their son is a difficult task for the parents. The family of a soldier faces difficulties in endless forms. They have to make many sacrifices. We wish a good and satisfactory life for the family of Captain Jass. The pain of losing their child can only be felt by parents. The nation is proud of Captain Devinder Singh Jass. We can never forget his supreme sacrifice to the nation.
