India Just Unveiled a New Combat Drone – Meet ZOLT UCAV

Indian unmanned aerial systems manufacturer ideaForge Technology Limited has announced two new variants of its ZOLT tactical UAV platform: the ZOLT Hybrid and ZOLT Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV).

The company says the new platforms are intended to expand ZOLT from a conventional surveillance-oriented system into a broader tactical UAV family capable of supporting missions ranging from persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance to precision effects.

The announcement, made in Mumbai on 6 October 2026, marks ideaForge’s entry into the long-range ISR and UCAV segments. The two variants use different propulsion concepts, allowing the platform to be tailored to different operational requirements. The ZOLT UCAV is battery powered, while the ZOLT Hybrid combines an internal-combustion engine with battery power for longer missions.

Two ZOLT Variants for Different Missions

The ZOLT UCAV is positioned as the more tactical member of the family. According to ideaForge, it offers an endurance of 2–3 hours, a 30–50 km Line-of-Sight (LOS) transmission range, and can be launched from altitudes of up to 4,500 metres AMSL.

The company says the UCAV variant is designed for tactical missions and precision effects, giving users a platform that can move beyond simply collecting battlefield information.

The ZOLT Hybrid, meanwhile, is focused on longer-duration missions and persistent overwatch. Its hybrid propulsion system combines an IC engine and battery power, allowing an endurance of more than six hours and up to 100 km LOS transmission. Its stated launch altitude capability is up to 2,000 metres AMSL.

This distinction gives the ZOLT family two different operating profiles: a shorter-endurance tactical system for missions requiring precision effects and a longer-endurance platform for sustained surveillance and overwatch.

Built for Electronic Warfare-Contested Environments

One of the key features highlighted by ideaForge is the platform’s focus on operating in environments where conventional communications and satellite navigation may be disrupted.

The company says ZOLT incorporates an indigenous EW-resilient technology stack built around three core capabilities: anti-jam communications, GNSS-denied navigation and onboard intelligence.

These technologies are intended to help the UAV maintain communication and navigation capabilities when signals are degraded, jammed or denied. Onboard processing can also allow some decision-making to take place at the edge, reducing reliance on a continuously available data link.

For military operators, this is particularly relevant because modern battlefields increasingly involve electronic warfare systems designed to disrupt communications, navigation and control links. ZOLT’s stated architecture therefore focuses not only on range and endurance but also on maintaining functionality in contested electromagnetic environments.

More Than a Surveillance Drone

ideaForge says the ZOLT family can support a wide range of tactical missions, including border and frontier surveillance, tactical reconnaissance, target acquisition and battlefield intelligence.

The platform can also provide fire-support intelligence, including Direction of Own Artillery Fire (DOOAF), while supporting day-and-night long-range surveillance.

Another important element is the platform’s payload flexibility. According to the company, ZOLT can be configured with its NAKSH family of ISR payloads, including electro-optical, infrared and mid-wave infrared sensors, along with laser ranging and tracking capabilities.

This allows the same broader UAV architecture to be adapted for different intelligence and surveillance requirements rather than being tied to a single sensor or mission profile.

High-Altitude ZOLT Variant Also Planned

ideaForge has indicated that the ZOLT family will expand further.

The company says it is preparing a High Altitude variant based on the ZOLT Hybrid, intended for operations in contested terrain. This version is expected to have a launch altitude capability of up to 4,000 metres AMSL

The planned variant could be particularly relevant for operations in difficult and high-altitude terrain, although the company has not disclosed further performance details in the current announcement.

What the ZOLT Launch Means for ideaForge

The ZOLT announcement is significant for ideaForge because it represents an expansion from the company’s established UAV portfolio into two increasingly important areas of unmanned warfare: long-range ISR and armed/precision-effect capable systems.

Rather than introducing entirely separate platforms for each role, ideaForge is presenting ZOLT as a common platform architecture that can be configured around different propulsion systems, endurance requirements and mission needs.

According to Sachin Pukale, AGM of Product Management at ideaForge, the tactical long-range UAV sector is evolving from systems primarily focused on observing the battlefield toward platforms that can contribute more directly to missions. The company says ZOLT Hybrid and ZOLT UCAV are intended to provide greater flexibility in balancing endurance, reach and mission requirements while retaining a common architecture and resilience against contested environments.

For India’s growing indigenous drone ecosystem, the development also reflects a broader shift toward UAVs designed specifically for modern military environments where electronic warfare, GPS denial, persistent surveillance and rapid target acquisition are becoming increasingly important.

Bottom Line

With ZOLT Hybrid, ZOLT UCAV and a planned High-Altitude variant, ideaForge is attempting to build a more versatile tactical UAV family rather than a single-purpose drone.

The immediate distinction is clear: ZOLT UCAV prioritises tactical missions and precision effects, while ZOLT Hybrid focuses on endurance and persistent overwatch. Both are being positioned around EW resilience and multi-mission capability.

How effectively these systems perform in actual operational conditions will ultimately depend on factors such as payload performance, autonomy, survivability and their ability to operate under real-world electronic warfare conditions. For now, the launch represents a notable expansion of ideaForge’s indigenous tactical UAV portfolio.
