Javelin vs Indian Army ATGMs: A Comprehensive Comparison of Anti-Tank Capabilities

The Indian Army recently signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) to procure the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system. This deal is valued at approximately $45.7 million (Rs 292 crore). The Javelin missile system is developed and produced by the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV), which is a partnership between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

Under the sixth emergency procurement window (EP-6), the Indian Army will acquire 25 Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLUs)  and around 60-100+ Javelin missiles, with deliveries expected by the end of 2026-27. The procurement is done under emergency powers granted to the armed forces, and there is also the possibility of joint co-production in future

How ATGMs Work

Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) are precision weapons designed to destroy armoured vehicles, primarily tanks. Unlike unguided rockets, ATGMs use guidance systems that allow them to track and hit specific targets with high accuracy.

Modern ATGMs typically follow this sequence: Target acquisition → Lock-on → Launch → Guidance → Impact. The guidance can be wire-guided (older systems), radio command, laser beam-riding, infrared homing, or fire-and-forget (most advanced). The warhead usually features tandem charges: the first blast detonates the tank’s Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), while the second penetrates the main armour to destroy the vehicle.

The Javelin ATGM comes with “fire-and-forget” capability. Once launched, the missile guides itself to the target using its own sensors, allowing the operator to take cover or reposition immediately.

Performance Of ATGMs In Russia-Ukraine War

The Russia-Ukraine war has been acting as a proving ground for ATGMs, and particularly the Javelin, dubbed “Saint Javelin” by Ukrainian forces, has been a very effective weapon against massive Russian armoured vehicles. According to various reports, the missile has achieved 89-94% hit rates in combat, with the manufacturer claiming a 94% engagement success rate(take it with a pinch of salt, though). More than 10,000 Javelins were supplied to Ukraine by September 2024.

The Javelin’s tandem-charge HEAT warhead, where the first charge detonates the tank’s ERA while the second penetrates the main armor – rated to defeat over 760mm of rolled homogeneous armour equivalency. This capability has made Russian tanks, including the T-72, T-80, and even T-90 variants, vulnerable to Ukrainian infantry armed with these portable systems.

ATGMs have evolved through generations, each representing an advancement in technology and capability:

First Generation

  • Guidance: Manual Command to Line of Sight (MCLOS)
  • Examples: French SS.11, Soviet 3M6 Shmel (AT-1 Snapper)
  • Characteristics: Required constant operator input, limited range (~2-3 km), wire-guided
  • India initially license produced the French SS.11B1

Second Generation

  • Guidance: Semi-Automatic Command to Line of Sight (SACLOS)
  • Examples: MILAN (France), 9M113 Konkurs (Soviet AT-5 Spandrel)
  • Characteristics: Operator only needs to keep the sight on target, missile automatically corrects course, improved range (~4-5 km)
  • India’s Amogha-II uses SACLOS with radio frequency guidance

Third Generation

  • Guidance: Fire-and-forget with imaging infrared (IIR) or laser homing
  • Examples: Javelin (US), Nag (India), MPATGM (India), Spike (Israel)
  • Characteristics: Lock-on before or after launch, autonomous guidance, top-attack capability, range 2-8 km
  • Nag family (HELINA, Dhruvastra), MPATGM, Amogha-III

Fourth Generation

  • Guidance: Milimeter waves, multi-mode seekers (IIR + laser + radar), datalink
  • Examples: Javelin F-model, Spike NLOS, Brimstone
  • Characteristics: Extended range (8-25+ km), loitering capability, networked targeting, multi-platform launch
  • SANT (Stand-off Anti-tank Missile) is India’s step toward this generation

Why Indian Army Going For Javelin Along With Indigenous Options

Considering both our neighbors have significant armored forces, Indian Army needs ATGMs in large numbers, while indigenous option such Nag, and the MPATGM which is comparable to Javelin in capability would fulfill the requirements, the Javelin procurement is seen more as a deal to strengthen our defence relationship with US considering the kind of president we have to deal with now and also the deal was in pipelines for decades now(almost 15 years).

While the deal is not that significant in terms of monetary value, it would with deliveries expected by end of 2026-27, and Javelin’s proven capability against modern tanks, only enhance Army’s anti tank capability especially for our special forces and mountain divisions, specially the Ukraine war has shown that ATGMs are force multipliers – allowing relatively small infantry units to take on and defeat heavily armored formations, so its always good to have more options.
