Hello Defence Lovers. This is the 2nd part of the article “Want To Be An Officer In The Indian Armed Forces?”. If you haven’t read the 1st part then read it first. The link of the 1st part is given below.

In the previous article, I have explained 4 different Officer entries, which are- NDA, TES, UES, NCC. In this article, we will begin with the B.Sc. Nursing entry and then discuss the CDS and AFCAT entry. So, Let’s begin with B.Sc. Nursing.

AGE LIMIT FOR ALL OFFICER ENTRIES

In the above table, you can see M or F or both written against each entry in a bracket. M means Male, and F stands for FEMALE. It means that if only M is written against any entry, then that entry is for MALE candidates only. Similarly, if F or M/F is written against any entry, then only FEMALE or MALE and FEMALE both can apply for that specific entry.

The age shown in the rightmost column is at the time of commencing of course of that specific entry and not at the time of filling of forms.

5. B.Sc. NURSING

Most of the people have not heard about this entry. This is an Entry for female candidates only. They are trained in the Colleges of Nursing of Armed Forces Medical Services. Candidates are awarded admission in Colleges of Nursing based on the merit cum choice, subject to medical fitness, and the vacancies in each College. The selected candidates shall execute an Agreement/Bond to serve in the Military Nursing Service. On successful completion of nursing training (4years), the candidates will be granted Permanent/Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service, under the terms and conditions laid down for grant of such commission.

Eligibility Conditions:

(a) Female candidates who are unmarried/divorced/legally separated/ widow without encumbrances.

(b) Nationality: Citizen of India

(c) Age: 17 years to 25 years

(d) Educational Qualification: Candidate must have passed in the first attempt their Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent (12 Years schooling) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology), and English with not less than 50% aggregate marks as a regular student from a Statutory / Recognized Board /University/ Examination Body. Candidates who will be appearing for the final year of qualifying examination during the current academic session may also apply provisionally. The candidates finally selected for the course will have to submit proof of passing the qualifying examination with requisite subjects and marks before joining the Course.

How to Apply for B.Sc. Nursing?

The online application will be hosted on the web page of www.joinindianarmy.nic.in The procedure for filling up the application form, online payment of application processing fee, generation of admit card, the publication of the result of the Written Test & subsequent call letters for interview will be available on the same website.

·Candidates may apply online and pay the application fee online only through www.joinindianarmy.nic.in
· Eligibility of the candidate will be known while submitting the online application.
· The candidate’s E-mail ID is the user ID for this website and the candidate will select their own password. It is mandatory for the candidate to give one live contact mobile number for correspondence.
· The Eligible candidates will only be able to pay online the application processing fee of Rs 150/-. On successful completion of online payment, a bank reference number will be generated for the future correspondence of the candidate.

6. CDS EXAM (COMBINED DEFENCE SERVICES EXAM)

Indian Military Academy, Dehradun

The “Combined Defence Services” (CDS) Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the recruitment of candidates into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy. The UPSC will conduct the CDS exam twice a year in the month of February and September.

Eligibility criteria for CDS Exam:

1. Nationality

A candidate must be either a:

(i) Citizen of India, or

(ii) subject of Nepal, or

(iii) subject of Bhutan, or

(iv) Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

(v) person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note: Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India

  • Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal
  • A candidate who has resigned or withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the training academies of Armed Forces is not eligible to apply

2. Educational Qualification

  • For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy-Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
  • For Indian Naval Academy-Degree in Engineering from a recognized University/Institution.
  • For Air Force Academy-Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

NOTE:

  • Graduates with the first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.
  • Candidates who are studying in the final year/semester Degree course and have yet to pass the final year degree examination can also apply provided candidate should not have any present backlog up to the last semester/year for which results have been declared up to the time of submission of application and they will be required to submit proof of passing the degree examination at the time of commencement of course.
  • Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination (I) & (II), 2020 as per guidelines are given in the official notification.

3. Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status for

  1. IMA – Unmarried male candidates age between 19 to 24 years only are eligible.
  2. Indian Naval Academy – Unmarried male candidates age between 19 to 24 years only are eligible.
  3. Air Force Academy – 20 to 24 years, (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable up to 26 yrs) only are eligible.
  4. Officers’ Training Academy — (SSC Course for men) unmarried male candidates age between 19 to 25 years, only are eligible.
  5. Officers’ Training Academy – (SSC Women Non-Technical Course) Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried, and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have an age between 19 to 25 years.

Note: Candidate below 25 years of age must be unmarried. One is not allowed to marry during the training period. Married candidates above 25 years of age are eligible to apply but during the training period they will neither be provided married accommodation nor can they live with family out of the premises.

4. How to apply for CDS Exam

UPSC CDS Application form can be filled in online mode only at the official website. The application process involves two parts – Part 1 is basic registration and Part 2 includes fee payment, filing up form and uploading scanned documents. Candidates are advised to go through official CDS notification before proceeding to fill the form.

7. AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test)

AFCAT

The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is conducted by the Indian Air Force. The exam is held twice a year in February and August/September, respectively, to select Class-I Gazetted Officers in Flying and Ground Duties (Technical and Non-Technical).

AFCAT is a gateway for both male and female candidates who wish to join the Indian Air Force for both Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent Commission/Short Service Commission in Ground Duties for both Technical and Non-Technical roles.

Candidates are selected based on their performance in the online exam and Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview. Candidates opting for Ground Duty (Technical) branches are required to appear in both AFCAT and Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT).

Eligibility criteria for AFCAT Exam

1. Nationality

A candidate must be either a:

(i) Citizen of India, or

(ii) subject of Nepal, or

(iii) subject of Bhutan, or

(iv) Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

3. Marital Status

  • Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried at the time of commencement of the course.
  • Widows/Widowers and divorcees below 25 years of age are also not eligible.
  • Candidates who marry to the date of his application though successful at SSB or medical will not be eligible for training.
  • Those who marry during the period of training will be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditure incurred on him by the government.
  • Married candidates above 25 years are eligible to apply but during their training period, they will neither be provided married accommodation nor can they live with family.

4. Educational Qualifications

FLYING BRANCH Candidates must have passed with a minimum of 60% in Maths and Physics at Class 12 and Graduation in any discipline with 60% or equivalent. Or
BE/BTech with 60% or equivalent. Or
Candidates have cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with 60%.
GROUND DUTY (TECHNICAL BRANCH)Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics):
Passed Class 10+2 with 60% marks each in Physics and Mathematics and four years degree Engineering/ Technology
Or
Cleared Sections A and B of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies with 60% in disciplines specified by the examination authority.
Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical):  
Candidates must have passed 10+2 with 60% in Physics and Mathematics and degree/integrated post-graduation in Engineering/Technology. Or
Cleared sections A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies with minimum 60% marks or equivalent in certain disciplines specified by IAF.
GROUND DUTY (NON-TECHNICAL BRANCH)Administration:
Graduation in any discipline with minimum 60%
Or
Cleared section A&B examination of  Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized university with 60%.

How to Apply for AFCAT EXAM?

AFCAT application form is released online on the official website. To fill the application form, it is mandatory to have the Aadhar Card. The application fee which can be paid through the online payment gateway is Rs 250 for all categories. It is advised to candidates to check the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. 

AFCAT admit card can be accessed through candidates’ login. Registered candidates can download the admit card by entering email ID and password. The hard copy of the admit card is not sent to candidates by post.
