LATEHAR: Four Injured In Naxal Attack In Jharkhand’s Coal Mine A group of Naxalites raided a coal mining project in Jharkhand’s Latehar district and opened indiscriminate firing in which four persons were injured, police said on Saturday. The Naxalites went to the Tetariakhar coal project under the jurisdiction of Balumath police station in the district on Friday night and opened fire, they said.

The Naxalites also set four trucks on fire, the police said. A police team rushed to the spot on hearing the news about the Naxal attack but by the time it reached the Naxalites had fled from the spot, they said. The injured persons were taken to the Balumath Community Health Centre, they added.

WHAT IS NAXALS ?

A Naxal or Naxalite is a member of any political organization that claims the legacy of the Communist Party of India, founded in Calcutta in 1969. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) is the largest existing political group in that lineage today in India. The Naxalites have frequently targeted tribal, police, and government workers in what they say is a fight for improved land rights and more jobs for neglected agricultural laborers and the poor.The Naxalites operate in 60 districts in India, mainly in the states of Odisha (5 affected districts), Jharkhand (14 affected districts), Bihar (5 affected districts), Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh (ten affected districts), Madhya Pradesh (8 affected districts), Maharashtra (2 affected districts) and West Bengal (8).
