Private Sector Delivers First Tejas Mk1A Rear Fuselage to HAL

At the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Aircraft Division in Bengaluru, Karnataka, something noteworthy happened on March 9, 2025. Made by an Indian private company, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services Private LTD, HAL received the first rear fuselage for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A. India’s Defence Minister (Raksha Mantri), Shri Rajnath Singh, who characterized the ceremony as a significant turning point in India’s path towards self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in defence manufacture, attended it. He underlined that this success attests to the government’s will to increase defense sector public-private cooperation.

What is a Fuselage?

The fuselage is the main body of an aircraft. It houses the pilot, passengers, and cargo. The rear fuselage, specifically, supports the tail section and its components, playing a critical role in the aircraft’s structure and stability.

Importance of the Event

With private businesses as Alpha Tocol, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Tata Advanced Systems, and VEM Technologies supporting HAL, Shri Rajnath Singh likened HAL to the “fuselage” of India’s defence and aerospace sector. He underlined that the expansion of India’s defence capability depends on this cooperation between HAL and commercial corporations. He expressed hope that this cooperation would enable India’s aerospace and defence sectors soar to fresh heights.

The Defence Minister praised the bravery and dedication of India’s air warriors (IAF personnel) and credited the growing strength of the IAF to the indigenously manufactured equipment. He stated that while the courage of the air warriors is invaluable, the advanced equipment being produced by Indian public and private sectors is providing them with the necessary tools to protect the nation’s borders. He expressed confidence that HAL and the private sector would continue to overcome challenges and support the Armed Forces in every possible way.

HAL’s Collaboration with Private Companies

HAL has placed orders with several Indian private companies, including L&T, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), VEM Technologies, and Lakshmi Machine Works (LMW), to supply major modules for the 83 LCA Mk1A aircraft contract. These companies are contributing to the production of critical components, enabling HAL to meet its delivery commitments to the IAF.

Progress So Far

HAL has already manufactured 12 rear fuselages for the LCA Mk1A, which are currently being used in the aircraft production line. With the supply of the rear fuselage by Alpha Tocol, a major structure module produced by an Indian private partner will now be integrated into the LCA Mk1A. This will help HAL meet additional delivery commitments to the IAF starting from 2025-26.
