BSF Open Fire At Drone Along Indo-Pak Border In Punjab’s Amritsar

(This was originally posted in India Today)

A drone was spotted along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Amritsar under Ajnala police station limits on Thursday. The drone movement was seen at around 12.30 am near the Shahpur border outpost. The 73 battalion of the Border Security Force opened fire on the drone, following which it went back towards the Pakistan side of the border.

The BSF and security agencies are combing the area amid suspicion that the drone was used to drop a consignment on the Indian side of the border. A similar drone was seen along the Indo-Pak border in the Amritsar sector on the intervening night of October 19 and 20, following which the BSF opened fire. One kg packet of heroin and an iron ring attached to it were recovered by BSF personnel after searching the area, PTI reported.

The first-ever drone attack took place on June 27 at the Indian Air Force (IAF) station in Jammu. Two drones, which came from across the border, dropped bombs, injuring two airmen and damaging a portion of a building. Following a spate of drone sightings in recent months, the National Security Guard (NSG) has been deployed at the IAF stations in Srinagar and Jammu to provide anti-drone security cover to these vital installations.
