5 Bollywood Movies Every Defence Aspirant Must Watch

Hello defence lovers! In this article we are going to discuss about top 5 military bollywood movies. We have chosed these movies based on few parameters which are- historical accuracy, realism, and obviously the way our great armed forces have been portrayed.

Nowadays some movie makers have taken the sacrifices and efforts of our great armed forces for granted. One of Few worst examples of military Bollywood movies is Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. In this movie, how a girl struggles to chase her dreams has been portrayed. This is appreciable. But what is completely unacceptable that the way Indian Airforce has been portrayed. The moviemakers have completely forgotten why right from the National Defence Academy they are called “Gentlemen” Cadets. Before making such movies, the moviemakers must spend a day with a squadron, to observe how it works. Here fiction does not work.

So we have carefully choosen the movies which correctly depicts the courage, efforts and sacrifices of our great armed forces.

Lakshya

Lakshya is war-drama film directed by Farhan Akhtar and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, starring Amitabh BachchanHrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta in the lead roles. Hrithik Roshan plays the role of Lieutenant Karan Shergill (Later promoted to Captain), who develops from an aimless young man into a gentleman army officer. The story is set against a fictionalized backdrop of the 1999 Kargil War.

This Movie has wide fanbase among defence aspirant as it accurately depicts the barrier and obstacles that a candidate has to overcome in order to become an officer into the armed forces. Though the character Hrithik Roshan has played in the movie, it is suspicious that he would have cleared the Service Selection Board aka SSB as it requires utter dedication and passion. The movie accurately depicts the transformation, that a cadet undergoes during his/her training.

In the later section of the movie, the Kargil war is depicted. The military operations have realism in them but these are not that historically accurate. Overall a defence aspirant must watch this movie. Lakshya continues to inspire many aspirants to chase their dreams, the ‘lakshya’ of their livies.

Raazi

Raazi is a 2018 spy thriller film starring Alia Bhatt and featuring Vicky Kaushal, Rajit Kapur, Shishir Sharma, and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles. The film is based on Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel Calling Sehmat, a true account of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) spy who, upon her father’s request, is married into a family of high ranking military officials in Pakistan to relay intelligence reports and crucial information to India, prior to the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.

Raazi depicts how the secret services operate in foreign hostile territories. In the movie, Sehmat (played by Alia Bhatt) works as an undercover agent in Pakistan. She gathers valuable intelligence regarding a potential attack on INS Vikrant. But In order to maintain her secrecy, she has to make tremendous sacrifices. She displays patriotism to the utmost level.

Raazi gives us the idea about the unsung heroes of our nation, who remain behind the scenes but selflessly sacrifice everything for their nation.

Uri: The Surgical strike

Uri: The Surgical Strike is a 2019 Indian military action film. It is directed and written by debutant Aditya Dhar, produced by Ronnie Screwvala. The film stars Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal, Yami Gautam, Mohit Raina and Kirti Kulhari. The plot is a dramatised account of the 2016 surgical strikes done in retaliation of Uri attack, in which 19 soldiers of Indian Army were martyred. Vicky Kaushal plays the lead role of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, a Para Sf commando of the Indian Army.

In the first part of the movie, the plot revolves around the 2015 surgical strikes in Myanmar. The events are a bit dramatised when compared to the actual events. In the later segment of the movie, the plot revolves around the personal life of Major Vihan Shergil, the protagonist. The challenges a special forces operative and his family faces are very well depicted. In the last segment of the movie, the infamous terror attack on Uri is shown to the viewers. Affected by great personal loss and outraged by the coward attack, Major Shergill seeks all ways to take revenge. He gets the golden opportunity to lead the planned surgical strikes. the way our intelligence gathering services work are also very well depicted. In the last part of the movie, the execution of the surgical strikes is shown in a very dramatised and a bit unrealistic manner. The movie Uri fills the viewer with patriotism at the end. Goosebumps are guaranteed!

LOC Kargil

LOC Kargil is a 2003 historical war film based on the 1999 Kargil War. It produced and directed by J. P. Dutta under his J.P. Films Banner. The film features an ensemble cast of Bollywood stars and music composed by Aadesh Shrivastava and Anu Malik, with the former composing the score and the latter composing the songs.

LOC Kargil is one of the most realistic and historically accurate movies in the history of the entire Bollywood. Right from the beginning of the movie, the events of Kargil war is very accurately depicted. The movie starts with the missing petrol part of Captain Saurav Kalia. The situation of Kargil, the tactical advantage the Pakistani Intruders had is very well explained in the movie. LOC Kargil features most of the regiments which captured some of the most significant posts. All the famous battles like the capture of Tololing, Tiger Hill etc are featured in the movie. It features all the legendary heroes of Kargil which include Captain Vikram Batra PVC, Lietantant Manoj Pandey PVC, the living legend Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav PVC and many more. This is a must-watch military Bollywood movie for a defence aspirant as it not only depicts the events of Kargil war very accurately but also motivates the viewer to join the armed forces.

Border

Border is a 1997 war film directed, produced and written by J. P. Dutta. Set during the Bangladesh liberation war of 1971, is based on the famous Battle of Longewala in 1971. The film stars an ensemble cast of Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Sudesh Berry, Puneet Issar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Tabu, Raakhee, Pooja Bhatt, and Sharbani Mukherjee also feature in supporting roles.

The movie border starts from the movement of Alpha company of 23rd Batallion of Punjab regiment to the Longewala Post under the command of Major Kuldip Sing Chandpuri. Some pre-war incidents are depicted. Some of these incidents are true and some of them are fictional due to cinematic reasons. The Battle of Longewala is very dramatically depicted and is actually very far from reality. In the movie, the casualties on the Indian side is shown high but actually, two soldiers were killed.

Though the movie is entertaining and motivating but not historically accurate. However, Sunny Deol plays the role of Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri beautifully. It is one of the must-watch military Bollywood movies.

So these were the top military Bollywood movies. Although we cannot add all the military Bollywood movies, some of the other great movies are Saurya, Paltan, 1971, Kesari, Holiday, Parmanu Agnipankh, The Gazhi Attack, Tango Chalie and many more.
