Tonbo Imaging: India’s Own Hi-Tech Startup

WHAT IS TONBO IMAGING ?

Tonbo Imaging is an Indian defence company headquartered in Bengaluru. It was founded by an alumnus of Bits-Palani in 2008. Tonbo Imaging is providing key defense technology such as sensors, UAV’s communication, and software to the government for the past 12 years. It is working to make India self-reliant in defense equipment production currently they have offices and manufacturing plants in four countries India, the United States Of America, Singapore, and Lithuania.

Recently they have provided the Indian army with the latest, State-of-the-art surveillance, thermal, and Night vision devices such as T-REX and Arjun. These devices are used in LAC and LOC to monitor the movements of the enemy.

VARIOUS TONBO IMAGING SYSTEMS USED BY INDIAN FORCES

  1. T-REX

T-REX is developed by Tonbo Imaging it is a long-range reconnaissance and observation system. T-REX includes an optical imager and thermal scanner along with a magnetic compass. it has a surveillance range of approximately 20 km. T-REX can detect any movements in Day and night. It’s own GPS can provide exact coordinates of the target. Currently, these systems are deployed on LAC (CHINA) as well as on LOC. It helps the Indian army to keep a check on enemy movements.

WHAT IS A THERMAL SCANNER ?

A thermal scanner is a non-invasive and non-radiation procedure that detects and produces a careful analysis of skin temperature patterns as a reflection of normal or abnormal human physiology.

2. ARJUN

Under the Make-In-India initiative, Tonbo imaging developed a thermal weapon sight for the Indian armed forces. Arjun sight can be attached to small, medium as well as large caliber guns. Arjun sights are also deployed on LAC and LOC. These come in handy at night it helps in tracking enemy. Arjun sights can also be mounted on helmets and can be used as NVD (night vision device). Arjun has three short, medium, and long-range variants for engagement requirements.

SHORT-RANGE– It has an engagement range up to 150m and has a magnification of 4x or less.

MEDIUM RANGE– It has an engagement range up to 400m and has a magnification of 4x-20x.

LONG-RANGE- It has an engagement range up to 800m and has a magnification of 4X-25X.

3. PHOTON

Photon is a multi-sensor enhanced driver vision system. It helps in detecting threats in smoke, fog, and dark. DRDO’s WHAP 8*8 vehicle is also equipped with photon DVE(Driver Vision System).

4. ELPEOS

ELPEOS is a multi-sensor optical payload designed for easy integration in remote-controlled weapon stations and long-range surveillance. It features a long range finder along with a Ballistic Computer. It is designed to survive shocks of up to 12.7 MM weapons. It is also equipped in India’s Arjun MBT (main battle tank).

5. RAPTOR

RAPTOR is a light-weight multi-purpose thermal imaging sight designed for small and medium caliber guns. It can also work as a helmet-mounted sight. In 2019 it was introduced to the Indian army as a sight which can be used on India’s AK-203 and SIG-SAUER rifles.

6. BNVD

BNVD- Binocular night vision device googles developed by Tonbo Imaging. These BNVD were also used in the 2016 URI-SURGICAL STRIKE by Indian special forces. BNVD is a lightweight NVD. It works on an “AA” alkaline battery. It has a special feature where it automatically shuts-off when not in viewing position.

7. BNVD-P

BNVD-P is a panoramic night vision device. It used by Indian special forces. It gives a better vision to the soldier. BNVD-P has a wide 90-degree view field. It is mainly used by NSG commandos in India.

7. SPARTAN

SPARTAN is a next-gen tactical thermal sight powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset which gives high GPU processing power. It is the world’s lightest AI-powered scope it only weighs 300 grams. It was introduced in 2019 in India’s defense exhibition. It also works as a monocular helmet-mounted sight.
