Russia’s 2S35 Koalitsiya-Revolutionizing Modern Artillery Warfare

By Girish Linganna

Artillery systems play a vital role in military operations by offering indirect fire support. Russia has a rich history in developing such systems, and the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV stands as the newest addition to its line of self-propelled guns crafted to meet the requirements of contemporary warfare.

Self-Propelled Artillery is artillery affixed to a mobile platform, enabling autonomous movement and maneuvering capabilities in battlefield scenarios.

Indirect Fire involves shooting at targets beyond the direct line of sight of the gunner, typically employing ballistic trajectories.

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV made its debut at the 2015 Victory Day Parade in Moscow. It aims to replace older artillery systems such as the 2S19 Msta-S

, bringing notable enhancements in performance. Mounted on a tracked platform, it ensures mobility and effective operation in different terrains.

An important aspect of the Koalitsiya-SV is its fully automated loading system, enabling a rapid rate of fire. It can shoot up to 16 rounds per minute, a significant improvement from earlier versions. The system features a 152mm gun capable of firing various ammunition types, including regular explosive shells, guided projectiles, and cluster munitions.

The 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV is equipped with a sophisticated fire control system that incorporates computerized targeting and ballistic computers. This allows it to precisely engage targets at distances of up to 70 kilometers when utilizing rocket-assisted projectiles.

fire control system integrates information from targeting devices, environmental sensors, and ballistic computers to precisely aim and fire artillery.

The addition of the 2S35 Koalitsiya-SV to the Russian arsenal might change how artillery warfare unfolds. With Its automation, increased range, and accuracy, it enables quick deployment and target engagement while keeping the crew exposure to a minimum. This could enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of artillery support in offensive and defensive operations.

Moreover, the system’s capacity to employ precision-guided munitions makes it a powerful tool against tough targets, enemy fortifications, and even mobile objectives, broadening its effectiveness across various combat situations.
