Former Afghan President Ghani In Oman After Tajikistan Denied Landing

(This was originally posted in India Today by Gaurav C Sawant)

Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is in Oman after Tajikistan denied landing yesterday. He is likely to head to the US. Former NSA Mohib is also with Ghani in Oman. Earlier, Ashraf Ghani took to social media to say that he left the country to avoid bloodshed. The President had left the country after the Taliban narrowed in and took over Kabul.

Former Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai and head of the High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah are attempting to negotiate with the Taliban for an inclusive government. It remains to be seen how Taliban respond. Former vice-president of Afghanistan, Amrullah Saleh was in Panjshir before going to Tajikistan.

In the last few days, the Taliban fighters have swept through most parts of the country, seizing control of around 25 of 34 provincial capitals including cities such as Kandahar, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad — and finally took over the country on Sunday.
