Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai Appointed Deputy Chief Of Army Staff (Strategy)

Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, who had received a call from Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) during India’s intense strikes on Pakistani airbases in Operation Sindoor—pleading for a ceasefire—has now been appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy). He will continue to serve concurrently as the Director General of Military Operations.

The position of Deputy Chief (Strategy) is a relatively new and strategic appointment within the Indian Army, tasked with overseeing critical wings including the Operations and Intelligence Directorates. As per the Ministry of Defence, it is regarded as one of the most significant leadership roles in the current military structure.
In recognition of his exemplary service, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai was also conferred the prestigious Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) on June 4 during the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2025 (Phase-II).
Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, a senior officer from the Kumaon Regiment, has held several key operational roles in his military career. As the GOC of the Chinar Corps before becoming DGMO, he was at the forefront of counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
