Project KAL – India’s Answer to Shahed?

India is preparing to enter the long-range strike drone category with a new indigenous program called Project KAL, being developed by IG Defence. The company recently revealed the first glimpse of this new unmanned combat platform, marking a step forward for India’s growing drone warfare capabilities.
In recent conflicts, long-range one-way attack drones have become a key feature of modern warfare. Systems like the Shahed-136 drone used by Iran have demonstrated how relatively inexpensive unmanned aircraft can strike targets hundreds of kilometres away while carrying explosive payloads.

These drones are particularly effective because they are cheap to produce and can be launched in large numbers. By overwhelming enemy air-defence systems, they force adversaries to fire very expensive interceptor missiles, creating a major cost imbalance. This trend has been clearly visible in the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, where waves of drones and missiles have been used across the region.
India’s Indigenous Answer

Against this backdrop, Project KAL aims to provide India with its own Made-in-India long-range strike drone capability According to initial details, the drone is being designed as a deep-penetration strike platform capable of operating far beyond the frontline.
Key expected features include:
- Range: Up to 1,000 km
- Endurance: Around 3–5 hours
- Role: Long-range one-way strike drone
This would allow the drone to travel deep into contested territory, monitor the target area, adjust its flight path if necessary, and strike at the most effective moment.
Designed for High-Value Targets
Project KAL is expected to carry a high-explosive payload, allowing it to target critical military infrastructure such as:
- Radar installations
- Logistics hubs
- Strategic facilities
- Other high-value military assets
Such drones offer armed forces a cost-effective option for long-range precision strikes, while also reducing the risk to pilots and personnel operating in high-threat environments.
Strengthening India’s Indigenous Defence Capability
Commenting on the development, Maj Gen R.C. Padhi (Retd.), Senior Vice President at IG Defence, highlighted how unmanned systems are transforming modern warfare.
He noted that recent conflicts in the Middle East have shown how long-range strike drones combine range, persistence, and affordability to influence military strategies According to him, developing platforms like Project KAL is an important step toward building indigenous defence technologies and strengthening India’s strategic autonomy.
Still in Early Development
At present, Project KAL is still in its early development stage, and the company has only released an initial glimpse of the platform. More technical details are expected to be revealed in the coming months. However, the project already signals India’s intention to expand its capabilities in advanced unmanned combat systems, supporting the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.
