A Dornier transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was involved in a minor accident earlier today. According to initial inputs, the aircraft caught fire upon landing at the main runway of the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday evening.

The IAF, in a statement, said the crew and the aircraft are safe. Further investigations would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the accident, the statement went on to say.

Sources told India Today that a fire was observed on the wheel of the IAF Dornier 228. The airport’s rescue and fire fighting services reached the site and extinguished the fire on the wheel of the turboprop airliner, added sources.

A twin-turboprop short takeoff and landing (STOL) utility aircraft, Dornier 228 is light weight and has a retractable tricycle landing gear. It can accommodate 19 passengers, including two pilots.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) developed Dornier 228 in collaboration with Swiss company RUAG Aerospace. All Dorniers commissioned by the armed forces are manufactured by the HAL at its transport aircraft division in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

In September of 2019, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had denied issuing a ‘type certificate (TC)’ allowing Dornier 228 to be operated in Europe.
